“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grade. A soul generated by love.”
— Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
I spent this Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day volunteering at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Anacostia, a historically black neighborhood in Washington D.C. It was freezing cold — about 28 degree — and we were outside cutting of English Ivy on trees to make sure it wouldn’t make the trees sick. My hands were cold. I couldn’t feel my toes. But nonetheless I had a great experience. I talked to the park rangers about how to identify poison ivy, I learned some of the history of the natural environment and I saw first-hand how my work helped improve the world around me.
Life is so busy. Remember to take the time to do some service. You always have time to make the world just a little bit better than how you found it.
