Jordyn’s Suggested Summer Reading 2013 List

Given the current professional aspirations and social climate in Chicago after my freshman year of college, I plan on reading these books to further put what is happening in my life in context:

  1. Front Row at the White House by Helen Thomas
  2. Amazing Grace by Jonathan Kozol
  3. And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
  4. Dreams of My Father by Barack Obama
  5. The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult
  6. Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult
  7. The Next Big Story by Soledad O’Brien
  8. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander
  9. The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore
  10. Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets by Sudhir Venkatesh
  11. No Disrespect by Sister Souljah
  12. The Other Side of the River by Alex Kotlowitz

I don’t plan on reading these in any particular order.

  1. Ooooo I had to read the other wes moore for Cornell College’s one book program (for incoming students). It’s a pretty good read: an interesting look at how certain factors (such as family support/money) can change our lives (especially when other things are working agaisnt us). It’s also a good way to get readers thinking about what agency they’ve had in their own lives that led to their success.
